Студенты в страхе вскочили с постели, думая, всем настал конец. Принялись ободрять один другого, выйти за дверь никто не смел. И каждый слышал, томясь душой, леденящие сердце свист и шипенье. Казалось, дом был полон ужей, гадюк и прочих мерзких гадов. Тут дверь к Фаусту открылась с громом, он закричал: "На помощь! Караул!". Но голос хриплый был слышен слабо, и все слабей, и вскоре Фауст умолк. Друзья решились войти к несчастному, только когда забрезжил день. Но Фауста не было, пусто всё.
