In those days, John the Baptist comes and preaches in the wilderness of Judea
and says: Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.
For he is the one whom the prophet Isaiah said about: the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make the paths straight to him.
John himself had clothes of camel hair and a leather belt on his loins, and his food was acridas and wild honey.
Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region of Jordan came out to him.
And they were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
But when John saw so many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to him to be baptized, he said to them: Generations of vipers! Who inspired you to flee from the future wrath?
make the worthy fruit of repentance
And do not think to say in yourself: "Abraham is our father," for I tell you that God can build Abraham’s children out of stones.
Already the ax at the root of the trees is laid: every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
I baptize you in water to repent, but He who comes after me is stronger than me; I am not worthy to bear His shoes; He will baptize you with the Holy Ghost and fire;
His shovel is in His hand, and He will cleanse His threshing floor and gather His wheat into the barn, and burn the straw with unquenchable fire.
Then Jesus came from Galilee to Jordan to John to be baptized by him.
And John kept him, and said, I must be baptized of you, and do you come to me?
But Jesus answered and said to him: Leave now, for it is in our way that we should fulfill all righteousness. Then John permits Him.
And being baptized, Jesus immediately went out of the water, and behold, the heavens opened to him, and John saw the Spirit of God, who descended like a dove, and descended upon him.
And behold, a voice from heaven, saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
