And Jacob went his way. And the angels of God met him.
When Jacob saw them, he said: This is God's army. And he called the name of the place: Mahanaim.
And Jacob sent messengers before him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, in the region of Edom,
And he commanded them, saying: Thus say to my lord Esau: this is what your servant Jacob says: I have lived with Laban and have lived to this day;
and I have oxen, and asses, and flocks, and slaves, and slaves; and I sent to inform my lord of myself, that I might obtain favor in your sight.
And the messengers returned to Jacob and said: We went to your brother Esau; he goes to meet you, and with him four hundred people.
Jacob was very frightened and embarrassed; And he divided the people who were with him, and the flocks, and small and large, and camels into two camps.
And he said: If Esau attacks one camp and beats him, the rest of the camp may be saved.
And Jacob said: The God of my father Abraham and the God of my father Isaac, Lord, said to me, Return to your land, to your homeland, and I will do you good!
I am not worthy of all the mercies and all the blessings that You have made to Your servant, for I have passed this Jordan with my staff, and now I have two camps.
Deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, so that when he comes, he will not kill me and my mother and children.
You said: I will do you good, and I will make your offspring like the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered from the multitude.
And Jacob slept there that night. And he took from what he had, as a gift to Esau, to his brother:
Two hundred goats, twenty goats, two hundred sheep, twenty rams,
thirty milk camels with their foals, forty cows, ten oxen, twenty asses, ten asses.
And he gave each his flock his own hands, and said to his servants, Go before me, and leave the distance from the flock to the flock.
And he commanded the first, saying, When my brother Esau meets you, and asks you, saying: Whose are you? and where are you going? and whose flock is this before you?
say thou, thy servant Jacob; this is a gift sent to my lord Esau; behold, he himself is behind us.
He ordered the same to the second and third, and to all who followed the flocks, saying: say so to Esau when you meet him;
and say: behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said to himself: I will have mercy on him with the gifts that come before me, and then I will see his face; maybe it will take me.
And the gifts went before him, and he spent the night in the camp that night.
And he rose that night, and took his two wives, and his two slaves, and his eleven sons, and forded over the Jabbok;
and, taking them, translated through the stream, and translated all that he had.
And Jacob was left alone. And a Man wrestled with him until dawn;
and seeing that he was not overpowering him, he touched the composition of his thigh and injured the composition of the thigh in Jacob, when he fought with Him.
And he said: Let me go, for the dawn has risen. Jacob said: I will not let you go until you bless me.
And he said, What is your name? He said: Jacob.
And he said: From now on, the name of you will not be Jacob, but Israel, for you have fought with God, and you will overcome men.
And Jacob asked, saying, Say your name. And he said: Why do you ask my name? And blessed him there.
And Jacob called the name of that place, Penuel; for, he said, I saw God face to face, and my soul was preserved.
And the sun rose when he passed Penuel; and he was limping on his thigh.
Therefore, to this day the children of Israel do not eat the vein, which is on the composition of the thigh, because the Fighter touched the vein on the composition of the thigh of Jacob.
