Highway Rider (2010)
Bradford Alexander Mehldau is an American pianist known both for his solo career and leadership of the trio named after him, and for his close collaboration with such famous musicians as Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter, Joshua Redman, Christian McBride, Michael Brecker, Chris Potter , Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jimmy Cobb, and classic vocalists Renee Fleming and Anne Sofie von Otter. Brad was born in Jacksonville, Florida, but his family soon moved to Connecticut, where he spent his entire childhood. As a 2nd grade high school student, Meldau received an award from Berkeley College, and after high school, in 1988, he moved to New York to study jazz at The New School. Later he played for a while as a sideman (mainly in the Joshua Redman quartet) until he founded his own trio in 1994. In addition to his own work, two of his recordings with Pat Matheny are popular.
Brad's main repertoire consists of his own compositions and jazz standards, but his most interesting arrangements of hits of pop and rock music have a special place. His list of rework includes such performers as Nick Drake, The Beatles, Radiohead, Paul Simon, Soundgarden and others. He is also known for his deep knowledge of philosophy, especially regarding the philosophy of music and art.
Meldau calls his main inspirers Larry Goldings, Kevin Hays, Peter Bernstein, Mark Turner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jesse Davis, David Sanchez and others.
Among the most extraordinary tricks of his technique should be noted the game in which different hands are played in different sizes. He is also known for using ostinato with his right hand, while developing the melody with his left.
"Highway Rider" is an expressive and bright double album, diluted with classical symphonic orchestral inclusions. The musician's next studio work became a return to the ideas of the 2002 album "Largo", which became the most experimental in the pianist's discography. Then the supporter of acoustic sound and the leader of one of the most significant piano trios of the last 20 years recorded an album on the verge of jam-bands, filled with electronic effects and modern funky rhythms.
