Last night as I lay dreaming
    of pleasant days gone by,
Me mind been bent on rambling,
    to Ireland I did fly,
I stepped on board a vision
    and followed with a will
Till next I came to anchor
at the cross near Spancill Hill.

    Delighted by the novelty,
    enchanted with the scene,
Where in me early boyhood - often I had been,
    I thought I heard a murmur
and I think I hear it still
It's the little stream of water
    that flows down Spancill Hill.

    To amuse a passing fancy
I lay down on the ground,
    And all my school companions
    they shortly gathered round
    When we were home returning
    we danced with bright goodwill,
    To Martin Moynahan's music
at the cross at Spancill Hill.

It was on the 24th of June,
    the day before the fair
    When Ireland's sons and daughters
    and all assembled there,
The young, the old, the brave, the bold
    came their duty to fulfil,
At the little church in Clooney,
    a mile from Spancill Hill.

I went to see me neighbours
to see what they might say,
The old ones they were dead and gone,
    the young ones turning grey,
I met the tailor Quigley, he was bold as ever still,
sure he used to make my britches
when I lived at Spancill Hill.

I paid a flying visit to me first and only love,
She's as fair as any lilly and gentle as a dove,
She threw her arms around me
crying "Johnny I love you still",
    She was a farmer's daughter,
    the pride of Spancill Hill.

Well I dreamt I hugged and kissed her
as in the days of yore
She said "Johnny you're only joking"
    as many the times before,
The cock crew in the morning,
he crew both loud and shrill
    And I awoke in California,
    many miles from Spancill Hill.

Notes : Author Unknown Spence Hill . It is believed that the song was written in 1800 , when thousands of Irish men and women left the country in search of a better life. Melody of the song is very slow and sleepy , that reflects well the main theme of the lyrics, as it is essentially the result of sleep " Johnny " , remembering everything that he left behind , waking up in California, in another world.

Last night, when I recalled the glorious days of youth ,
My spirit scurried as on the wings of his native Ireland.
I willingly on board their dreams stepped
And swam until anchored not far from Spence Hill.

I was delighted with the changes , landscape fascinated me :
Once I used to come here often boys .
I seemed to hear the murmur , the sound awakened memory -
It was a small rivulet , had fled to Spensill Hill.

I lay down on the ground to meet your sudden whim ,
And my school friends soon gathered around me .
We returned home , and every one of us was in a good ,
We danced to the music of Martin on the way to Moynatana Spensill Hill.

Predyarmorochny day was June twenty- fourth number :
Daughters and sons of Ireland, many friends came here .
And old and young , and who dared who brave every one to do his duty arrived
In the parish of Clooney , near Spensill Hill.

I went to visit the neighbors that they have a new look:
Old people have left, and those who had been young for a long time to turn gray .
I met a sailor Quigley , he's as arrogant, what used to be ,
He taught me here when I lived in Spensill Hill.

I paid a visit to his first and only love,
She still gentle as a dove and a beautiful lily.
Johnny, I love you! Sobbing , she hugged me hard.
She was a farmer's daughter , pride and joy Spensill Hill.

I dreamed I held her tightly as before kissing .
You are the same joker that before, Johnny - her voice whispered to me .
Morning rooster in the yard loud piercing wail ,
And I awoke in California, many miles from Spensill Hill.
