Green Bullfrog was Derek Lawrence's idea and was originally conceived as a full-blown project with relevant promotion by MCA and supposedly good sales.
The recording took place at De Lane Lea Studios in London in 1970. Lawrence acted as a producer, the sound engineer was a well-known specialist in his field, Martin Birch. However, Lawrence’s commercial plans
it was not destined to come true due to objective circumstances. Whatever the case, the album was released in March 1971 by Decca and only in March 1972 on the MCA in Europe. By not resolved to the end
the contractual circumstances of the musicians on the album are not indicated under their real names, which has the most detrimental effect on sales.
The musicians have long been the subject of controversy, as several statements have been made that have confused historians for a long time. For example, in an interview with Guitar Player magazine in September 1978, Blackmore said that "... That was me, Albert Lee and Jim Sullivan, Ian Paice and Roger Glover were on it and
whoever else was around at the time ... ", although on
in fact Roger was not there. A similar statement about his participation was made by Jeff Beck (Jeff Beck), which also was not confirmed. Several vinyl reprints in the 80s mentioned John Lord's participation in the record, which is also not true. There are several editions of Green Bullfrog on CD,
