Святитель Феофил был последним из владык Новгородских, избранных на вече. Об избрании его так повествует летопись: «Утром 15 ноября 1470 г. раздался благовест Св. Софии, в последний раз призывающий новгородцев приступить, по древнему обычаю, к избранию архиепископа Великого Новгорода и Пскова. Посадники новгородские и тысяцкие и весь Великий Новгород стал вечем у Св. Софии; и избра Бог у Святой Софии Премудрости Божией служителя своему престолу, а Великому Новуграду — преосвященного архиепископа, и осташе на престоле жребий Феофилов, протодиакона и ризника владычня». Состояние новгородского общества летописцы сравнивали тогда с морем во время бури... В этом обществе господствовали те, которые, по выражению митрополита св. Филиппа, «льстят сердца незлобивых, и посреди мирнующих вводят неправду и нелепую ярость», а потому для смиренного инока Отенской пустынной обители сан архиепископа, по справедливому замечанию архиепископа Филарета, «был причиной одних только скорбей». Трудно было сему святителю управлять своею паствою. Посадница Марфа Борецкая и ее приверженцы вооружали и возмущали народ против великого московского князя Иоанна III, а монах Пимен, сторонник Борецких, разжигал в пастве ненависть к архиепископу. Некоторые из новгородцев склонялись перейти на сторону Литвы, изменив московскому князю, и готовы были пойти на вероотступничество. Святитель Феофил останавливал мятежных новгородцев: «Не изменяйте Православию или не буду пастырем отступников, уйду назад в смиренную келлию, откуда извлекли вы меня на позорище мятежа». Сохранилась отреченная грамота святителя, написанная в 1479 г. Однако ослепленный народ не внимал словам пастыря: между Новгородом и Москвой разгорелась междоусобная война. Неоднократно разбитые новгородцы принуждены были просить пощады. Феофил был их заступником. Ему обязаны многие новгородские бояре освобождением из темниц литовских. В 1480 году святитель Феофил был отправлен Иоанном III на заточение (но он мог и сам проситься туда на покой, видя много смут в Новгороде) в Московский Чудов монастырь и «сидел полтретья лето, ту и преставися». По преданию, когда святитель Феофил лежал больной в Чудовом монастыре, во сне явился к нему Новгородский святитель Нифонт (+ 1156 г.; память 8/21 апреля), похороненный в пещерах преподобного Антония Печерского, и напомнил об обещании поклониться Печерским чудотворцам. Святой архиепископ отправился в Киев и уже приближался к Днепру, как болезнь его усилилась, и он получил откровение, что хотя не дойдет живым до пещер, но тело его упокоится в них. И это исполнилось. Память его совершается особо 26 октября/8 ноября, а также с Собором Дальних пещер 28 августа/10 сентября и во 2-ю Неделю Великого поста, с общим Собором Киево-Печерских отцов. In 1480, Saint Feofil was sent by John III for imprisonment (but he could, and he himself go there on peace, seeing a lot of meat in Novgorod) in the Moscow municipalities of the monastery and "Singing half awheel summer, that and we are melted." His memory is performed especially on October 26 / November 8, as well as with the Cathedral of the Far Falls on August 28 / September 10 and in the 2nd week of the Great Post, with the General Cathedral of the Kiev-Pechersk Fathers.
