Святая княгиня Иулиания была супругой удельного князя вяземского Симеона Мстиславича, подчиненного великому князю смоленскому. Смоленское княжество, срединное между Москвой и Литвой, переживало в то время тяжелую пору, последние годы существования. Витовт, великий князь литовский, решил окончательно подчинить себе исконно русское княжество. Московский же князь Василий Димитриевич, женатый на дочери Витовта, явно держал сторону тестя. И вот в 1404 году Смоленск был взят литовскими войсками и княжество Смоленское пало. Последний князь его Георгий Святославич, оставив в плену литовцев супругу свою, сначала отправился в Новгород Великий и в продолжение двух лет княжил здесь. Был вместе с ним и подручный князь его Симеон Мстиславич, супруг святой Иулиании. Затем бывший князь смоленский бил челом московскому князю, просился у него на службу. Князь вяземский, преданный своему старшему князю, не отставал от него. Василий Димитриевич принял на службу князя Георгия с его подручником и послал их обоих наместниками в Торжок, разделив город на две половины между князьями-наместниками. Блаженная Иулиания, супруга князя Симеона, процветала своими добродетелями, строгим целомудрием и блистала красотой телесной. Князь Георгий, супруга которого находилась в плену, прельстился ее красотою и уговаривал княгиню жить с ним. Святая долго удерживала князя, ослепленного страстью, от его злого умысла. Она ему говорила: «Зачем, господин, ты задумал такое зло? Вспомни, у меня есть муж. Как же я могу оставить живого мужа и пойти к тебе? Могу ли я осквернить чистое супружеское ложе? Лучше мне умереть, чем согласиться на такое дурное дело». Но блудная страсть ослепила ум и совесть несчастного князя. Побуждаемый диаволом, он не слушал слов блаженной Иулиании и решился силою, даже преступлением добиться своего. Георгий Святославич устроил пир у себя в доме и на этом пиру своими руками убил князя Симеона, ни в чем неповинного, всегда ему преданного, усердно ему служившего. Совершив злодеяние, он хотел тотчас же насытить свою скотскую похоть. Но святая Иулиания стала мужественно защищаться: она хотела ударить ножом в горло насильника, но только ранила его в руку. Вырвавшись из рук обезумевшего Георгия, княгиня выбежала на двор. В ярости князь погнался за нею, нагнал и зарубил мечом. Бездыханное тело святой мученицы по приказанию убийцы было брошено в реку Тверцу. Мученическая кончина блаженной Иулиании последовала в Торжке 21 декабря 1406 г. Терзаемый укорами совести и всеми порицаемый, князь Георгий бежал в Орду к татарам. Но и там не мог найти он себе покоя. Он возвратился в Русскую землю и искал пустыню, чтобы поселиться в ней и оплакивать свой страшный грех. Скоро он нашел такой монастырь — Николаевский на реке Осетре и был принят его игуменом, добрым старцем Петром. Но грешный князь пробыл здесь только несколько дней. Впал в болезнь и, принесши Богу искреннее покаяние, скончался 14 сентября 1408 г. Господу было угодно открыть тело святой мученицы. Весной один расслабленный крестьянин с трудом шел по берегу реки Тверцы. Вдруг он видит, что тело блаженной Иулиании плывет по реке не вниз, но вверх, против течения. Изумленный сим видением, крестьянин ужаснулся и хотел было уйти поскорее с этого места, но услышал голос, исходящий от бездыханного тела: «Раб Божий, не бойся. Ступай в соборную церковь Преображения Господня и возвести протопопу и прочим, чтобы они взяли мое грешное тело — тело Иулиании — и погребли его на правой стороне в этой церкви». В то же время расслабленный почувствовал себя совершенно здоровым. С радостью поспешил он исполнить чудесное приказание. Протоиерей со множеством народа отправился на указанное им место и здесь, недалеко от берега, они обрели честное тело блаженной Иулиании, перенесли его в город и с подобающим торжеством погребли у южных дверей Преображенского собора. Blessed Julian, the wife of Prince Simeon, flourished with her virtues, strict chastity, and shone with bodily beauty. Prince George, whose wife was in captivity, was seduced by her beauty and persuaded the princess to live with him. The saint for a long time kept the prince, blinded by passion, from his evil intent. She told him: “Why, sir, did you conceive such an evil? Remember, I have a husband. How can I leave a living husband and go to you? Can I defile a pure matrimonial bed? It’s better for me to die than to agree to such a bad deed. ”
But prodigal passion blinded the mind and conscience of the unfortunate prince. Encouraged by the devil, he did not listen to the words of blessed Juliania and decided by force, even by crime, to achieve his goal. Georgy Svyatoslavich made a feast in his house and at this feast he killed Prince Simeon, who was innocent, always devoted to him, who served him diligently. Having committed the atrocity, he immediately wanted to saturate his bestial lust. But St. Juliana began to defend herself courageously: she wanted to stab the rapist in the throat with a knife, but only wounded him in the arm. Having escaped from the hands of the distraught George, the princess ran out into the yard. In a rage, the prince chased after her, caught up and slaughtered with a sword. The lifeless body of the holy martyr, by order of the killer, was thrown into the river Tvertsa. The martyrdom of blessed Juliania followed in Torzhok on December 21, 1406.
Tormented by reproaches of conscience and reprobated by all, Prince George fled to the Tatars in the Horde. But even there he could not find peace for himself. He returned to the Russian land and looked for the desert to settle in it and mourn his terrible sin. Soon he found such a monastery - Nikolaev on the Sturgeon River and was received by his abbot, the good old man Peter. But the sinful prince stayed here only a few days. He fell into a disease and, having brought God sincere repentance, died on September 14, 1408.
The Lord was pleased to open the body of the holy martyr. In spring, a relaxed peasant walked along the banks of the Tvertsa River with difficulty. Suddenly he sees that the body of blessed Juliania is floating on the river not down, but up, against the stream. Amazed by this vision, the peasant was horrified and wanted to leave as soon as possible from this place, but he heard a voice coming from a lifeless body: “Servant of God, do not be afraid. Go to the cathedral church of the Transfiguration and build a protopope and others, so that they take my sinful body - the body of Julian - and buried it on the right side in this church. " At the same time, the relaxed felt completely healthy. With joy he hastened to fulfill a wonderful order. The archpriest, with many people, went to the place indicated by him and here, not far from the coast, they found the honest body of the blessed Juliania, transferred him to the city and buried with appropriate triumph at the southern doors of the Transfiguration Cathedral. At the same time, many patients received healing from their ailments.
