За стенами, В одиночку, как и было велено, Между снами, Через ночь под дождевыми тучами Мы ходили, Коротали знания неделями, Мы любили И мгновенья не искали лучшего. Нет чудес там, за мирами дальними, И до звезд для нас закрыта лестница, Растворилось красками-печалями Тусклое лицо бродяги месяца. Все едино, Осторожно: только шаг – и стронется След лавины Сотнями огней в долину звездную, И накроет Волшебством, и на века запомнится Всем героям Моего повествованья позднего. Где мы были? Так почти что все равно, – Девять раз стареть не обязательно. Мы дорогу разделили поровну Светлым вздохом, девятью печатями. Вне теченья, – Наши души не в ладах со временем, Шли мгновенья, Мы искали, мучались и верили: Будет завтра, Новый шаг и вечный поиск среднего – Нашей правды. В одиночку. Behind the walls,
Alone—just as we were commanded—
Between our dreams,
Through the night beneath the rain-laden clouds,
We wandered;
We whiled away our wisdom, week by week;
We loved,
And for a single moment, sought nothing better.
There are no miracles there, beyond the distant worlds;
The stairway to the stars remains forever closed to us;
Dissolving into hues of sorrow,
Fades the pale face of the wandering moon.
All is one;
Yet tread with care: a single step—and it will stir—
The trace of an avalanche,
Streaming with a hundred lights into the starry valley;
And it will engulf us
In magic, to be remembered for all time
By every hero
Of this, my late-told tale.
Where were we? It scarcely matters now—
One need not age nine times over.
We shared the road between us, equally—
With a luminous sigh, and nine seals of sorrow.
Outside the current—
For our souls are out of step with time—
The moments passed;
We sought, we suffered, and we held to our faith:
That tomorrow would come—
A new step, and the eternal quest for the middle way—
For our own truth.
